Parental Rights Legislation

The parents of public school children like their schools: a 1999 Phi Delta Kappa/Gallup poll shows 56% to 66% giving their schools an A or B. Most public schools are doing well or improving, and the others—especially in the inner cities—need more help, not abandonment. Public school test scores have risen, not fallen, and minority students have made the most progress (Student Achievement and the Changing American Family, 1995 Rand Corporation study).

However, religious right groups are working hard to discredit public education by constantly focusing on its problems, ignoring its successes and conducting a campaign of misinformation. By discrediting public education, these groups hope to convince legislators that tax supported private education via tuition tax credits or vouchers is the only means of improving our schools.

Since over 80% of private schools are religious in nature, this means taxpayer funding of religious instruction, some of which denigrates other religions. At the same time, attempts to inject religious ideology into every aspect of public school life are increasing, including efforts to teach creationism/intelligent design and to allow institutionalized prayer.
